How to Build + Keep Momentum in Business

Growing a business is no small feat & our role as the CEO is to create self-sustaining growth. When we start building momentum, the most magical things start happening – it’s easier to scale, our impact + reach increase exponentially, & we find more joy in living our purpose.

The physics of momentum

You may be familiar with the traditional concept of momentum: a measure of a mass's velocity (p=m⋅v). In business, we could translate that as our ease or speed to create new content consistently.

When we have momentum, it’s easier to stick to our habits even when we don’t feel like doing them. If you put a gold star on your wall calendar every day after working out, you’ll be more motivated to keep your streak unbroken. Tracking your progress releases dopamine, which rewards you to keep going.

The same is true in business – setbacks have less power over us when our habits / SOP, mindset + belief in ourselves are strong.

In order to increase momentum, we need to apply a force over a period of time (Δp=F⋅Δt) – it’s called a pulse. In business, this translates to scaling our operations with new effort. We can increase positive forces (resources, focus, growth mindset, willpower) or we can decrease negative forces / friction (errors or fears are minimized with systems & habits) & this allows us to increase our output consistently. Once the new practices are integrated in our business, the initiation phase, or the pulse, is done.

For example, onboarding a new team member or figuring out a new marketing strategy requires more energy at the beginning – they are intentional pulses of focused effort. Once the team member is comfortable in her role + responsibilities, or our marketing is dialed in, our business has greater momentum.

The sacred feminine of momentum

What is rarely talked about is that as humans, we operate within cycles. Thus, we aren’t constant with our motivation, willpower, inspiration, creativity, mental sharpness or even our energy.

We naturally pulse.

We are cyclic beings that have different seasons (or rhythms) of impulses – we naturally will go through phases of dreaming / inspiration, creativity, productivity, & integration. It’s a feminist act to reclaim that cycle instead of pretending to be on a masculine / linear growth trajectory.

In a closed system, momentum is conserved. This means that in theory, if nothing changes, our momentum would stay the same forever. But for the living soul, this concept ignores our innate desire to evolve! Too much predictability definitely fosters boredom & becomes a depleting, negative force.

Life around us constantly influences our momentum. We live in an open system with forces all around us – events, situations, other people. Sometimes, they slow us down, distract us or weaken our efforts. At other times, they inspire & help us innovate.

Momentum has both magnitude and direction (impact + vision) & the key is to be discerning about the changes we welcome in our business – we need to prioritize & stay connected to our (evolving) vision.

Manifesting growth in a fulfilling + sustainable way means that we take new risks + actions that are aligned with our values + mission (dharma). It also means that we recognize that there are cycles & what is sustainable will vary according to that.
